ABOUT THIS PROJECT
Housing corporation Nijestee commissioned this unique artwork as part of their project ‘Pimp your main entrance.’ The goal of the project was to add art to the main entrances of several apartment buildings in collaboration with the residents. For this project, two entrances were chosen in a street that connects two nature reserves, where wall-sized photographs were installed.
The street where the artwork was installed is a major link in the district, connecting two nature reserves. Water plays a central role in these reserves, making it the perfect subject to explore for the artwork. To visually capture the theme of connection, a pinhole camera was set up at the waterfront on one side of the street on a sunny day. Here’s how the process unfolded:
- The camera was left alone to be exposed for one hour.
- After setting the camera up, I walked to the other side of the street, taking about half an hour to get there.
- Once at the second location, I set up a second camera. Then, I walked back to the first location to remove the first camera and replace it with another one.
- This process repeated itself, with each camera being swapped at the half-hour mark.
Each of the four photos in this series has an exposure time of one hour, resulting in images that reveal the sun as a strip of light in the sky; the strips of light on the image overlap in each photo.
A connection is created using time, water, light, and space.
